Urban Design Lab

Exploring the coordination of buildings and public spaces to promote unique urban environments and public engagement.

What we are interesting in?

By integrating research areas, the research aims to provide a holistic understanding of the factors shaping urban environments
and to contribute to the development of more inclusive, attractive, and resilient cities.

Retail dynamics & Gentrification

We explore the transformation of urban neighborhoods through the influx of upscale retail stores. This field examines the impact on local economies, changes in property values, cultural shifts, and the displacement of long-standing businesses. Researchers in this area analyze patterns of retail location, demographic changes, and the socio-economic consequences for communities undergoing gentrification.

Streetscape

Streetscape refers to the visual and functional aspects of street design that contribute to the character and use of urban public spaces. This encompasses elements such as sidewalks, street furniture, lighting, and trees. Streetscape design aims to enhance aesthetic appeal, improve pedestrian safety and comfort, and support the vitality of public spaces. Research in this area focuses on the impact of design on behavior, the environment, and the overall quality of urban life.

Urban Design for Walkability

Urban design for walkability emphasizes creating pedestrian-friendly environments that encourage walking as a mode of transportation, recreation, and social interaction. This involves designing accessible, safe, and attractive routes that connect key destinations, incorporating green spaces, and promoting sustainable urban living. Researchers investigate the factors that influence walking behavior, the benefits of walkable communities, and strategies to integrate walkability into urban planning and policy.
